Faith Heads to Canberra: A HASS Adventure!

Faith Heads to Canberra: A HASS Adventure!
Faith News

From Monday 1 September to Wednesday 3 September 2025, a group of our Years 5, 6, and 7 Faith students embarked on an exciting adventure for our first-ever HASS Canberra Trip.

Over three days, they explored some of Australia’s most significant landmarks and institutions, bringing their classroom learning to life.

Day 1 - Exploring Canberra

Our students began their journey in Canberra with a visit to the National Capital Exhibition, where they uncovered the story of Canberra, followed by the Museum of Australian Democracy, providing a valuable learning experience about people power and making change.

Day 2 - Democracy, History, Art and Science

The following day was packed with highlights, starting with a simulated election and democracy activities at the Electoral Education Centre. Our students then honoured Australia’s history with a wreath-laying and remembrance ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. The day continued with students exploring "Art in Focus" at the National Gallery of Australia, hands-on sportex activities at the Australian Institute of Sport, and concluded with a Questacon "Q by Night" science experience.

Most of these kids did not know each other before coming together for camp. They impressed me with their resilience in their first big time away. They quickly opened themselves up to interacting with others, encouraging others, standing up for others, assisting others and working as a team.

Day 3 - Government in Action

On the final day, our students started off their day by taking part in a Canberra city bike ride. They then visited Embassy Drive, the Government House, and the Parliament House before taking off to go back home.

Final Thoughts

This adventure not only deepened students’ understanding of civics, history, and culture but also created lasting memories of their time together in our nation’s capital. Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible. We can't wait for next year!

My personal highlight was watching all 12 students participate in the war memorial wreath laying ceremony. Edmond read the Ode beautifully, while Thomas, Bianca, and Ellie respectfully laid the wreath. It was a very moving and special experience for both students and staff, as we reflected together on the Australian lives lost in war.
