Year 11 Chemistry Workshop Sparks a Reaction

Late last term, our Year 11 students from Faith Flexible Learning School participated in an engaging Chemistry workshop that brought scientific theory to life through practical experimentation. Under the guidance and supervision of Chemistry teacher, Bibi Thomas, students investigated the factors that influence rates of chemical reactions, gaining valuable hands-on experience in laboratory practices and scientific inquiry.

The workshop began with students conducting thorough risk assessments, an important aspect of scientific investigations that helps ensure safe laboratory procedures. They then carefully measured and handled acidic and basic chemicals, applying precision and attention to detail while preparing solutions for their experiments. A key feature of the workshop was the emphasis on collaborative learning. Working in teams, students shared responsibilities, discussed their findings, and collected data for further analysis. They used their results to explore statistical methods of interpreting experimental data, helping them understand how scientists use evidence to identify trends and support conclusions.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to apply classroom concepts in a real-world context, making Chemistry both meaningful and enjoyable. The workshop was a valuable learning experience that encouraged curiosity, scientific thinking, and a greater appreciation for the role of experimentation in understanding the world around us.
