Year 2 Cairns Kuranda Scenic Railway Excursion!

Students in Years 2 - 4 living in the Cairns area are invited to attend an educational excursion to the Kuranda Scenic Railway as part of our learning this term.

This experience supports our Year 2 theme, “The Year of Experimenting,” where students explore new environments, ideas and perspectives through real-world learning.

The excursion also connects strongly to the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) curriculum.

Students will:

• Identify the significance of the Kuranda Scenic Railway Station as an important local place
• Learn about the people and groups involved in the railway’s history
• Explore how transportation technology has changed over time and how these changes have impacted people’s lives

In addition, this excursion links to the Year 2 Earth Science strand and students will have the opportunity to:

• Observe natural features of the local environment
• Develop an understanding of how people interact with and care for the land

It also incorporates cross-curriculum priorities, including:

• Understanding connections between land, environment and cultural knowledge
• Recognising the importance of caring for the land and its features

📍 Where: Kuranda Scenic Railway Station, departing from Freshwater Railway Station

📅 Date: Friday, 1 May 2026

🕐 Time: Train departs at 8.55am, so please arrive by 8.30am

🕧 Return Time: 3.30pm arrival back at Freshwater Railway Station.

💲Cost: $21.75 per child, $43.50 per adult

This excursion provides a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of history, science and the environment through hands-on, meaningful experiences.
