Year 9 Poetry Workshop with Donita Bundy – State Library Excursion

Thirteen students from the Year 9 Cohort attended a Poetry Workshop at the State Library of Queensland, led by poet Donita Bundy.

The Power of Words

During the session, students explored how to immerse themselves in poetry by understanding that every single word on the page carries meaning. They learned that choosing the right word is essential to engaging the reader and conveying authentic emotion and intent.

Discovering Power Verbs

A key focus of the workshop was the use of power verbs - words that bring energy and precision to writing. Students discovered how these verbs can transform a poem, adding depth and authenticity to their creative expression.

Freedom in Poetry

Donita also emphasised that poetry is incredibly diverse: it can be described in countless ways, and importantly, not all poems need to rhyme. This insight helped students appreciate the freedom and flexibility of poetic form, encouraging them to experiment with their own unique voices.

A Welcoming Atmosphere

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with students all smiles as they engaged in the creative process. Many met their peers face to face for the first time, making the day not only educational but also socially enriching.

This was the first-ever event of its kind, and we hope to carry its success well into the future, creating more opportunities for students to connect, create, and be inspired through poetry.
