School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Discover the Faith Difference in Career Pathways
What is a School Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship?
A traineeship or apprenticeship is a structured way to learn a job while working. You earn a wage, gain hands-on experience, and complete formal training—usually a Certificate II, III or IV—through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- Apprenticeships are typically for trades like plumbing, carpentry, or electrical work.
- Traineeships cover a broader range of industries such as business, childcare, sport, hospitality, or IT.
A School-Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship (SBAT) allows students in Years 11 and 12 to get the best of both worlds:
- Continue working towards their QCE by completing senior subjects at school
- Begin training in a real workplace while earning a wage and gaining an industry-recognised qualification
This pathway is ideal for students who are ready to explore their future career options while still at school. It can also contribute points towards their QCE and open doors to full-time employment or further study after graduation.

How do you get a Traineeship or Apprenticeship
There are many ways to find a traineeship or apprenticeship, but the most successful approach often involves connecting with people in your community and gaining experience through work placements. Employers are more likely to offer opportunities to students who show initiative, reliability, and a genuine interest in learning.
While personal connections and work experience are key, there are also several organisations and platforms that support students in finding roles:

How do I decide on what Traineeship or Apprenticeship?
Choosing the right traineeship or apprenticeship starts with understanding your interests and exploring what opportunities exist in your local area. It’s important to consider not only what you enjoy, but also what industries are growing and offer strong future employment prospects.
1. Research Local Industries and Opportunities
Research the industries and opportunities that exist in your area using the Jobs and Skills Atlas to determine what industries exist and what the future employment prospects are.
2. Find Local Businesses in Your Area of Interest
Use Google Maps to search for businesses related to your field of interest. Zoom into areas you can realistically travel to, and look for companies that might offer work experience or traineeship opportunities in your area.
3. Try Work Experience
One of the best ways to explore different careers is through work experience. It gives you a chance to try out different roles, meet professionals in the field, and see what suits you.
