This Course teaches foundational Community Service skills with a Christian worldview. It is a fully remote course that combines online learning with 20 hours of practical work experience in a community services organisation.

Throughout this course, students will:

Develop the skills to work both independently and in a team environment
Learn how to effectively manage their time, priorities and workload
Understand and apply Workplace Health & Safety principles
Develop strategies on how to manage stress and maintain wellbeing
Gain valuable hands-on experience through a real-world work experience placement

Students will have the flexibility to choose where they would like to complete their 20 hours of work experience. This may include community organisations such as: churches, schools, not-for-profit organisations and community groups. Examples include animal shelters, community bookstores, soup kitchens, op shops, local sporting clubs, aged care facilities and community centres.

On completion of the course, students receive a nationally-recognised qualification, while also developing a deeper understanding of the benefits of serving and helping others.

4 QCE Points and flexible learning

Successful completion of this course contributes 4 QCE points towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Students can study from anywhere in Queensland, with most learning and assessment completed online and the required work experience placement undertaken within their local community.

Designed to be completed within 12 months, this course gives students the flexibility to progress through the assessment tasks at a faster pace if they choose.

You'll gain valuable experience working with others, develop your communication and teamwork skills, and build meaningful connections along the way.

Choose your work experience organisation

Students have the flexibility to choose a community organisation where they will complete their 20 hours of work experience, allowing them to serve in an area that interests them.

So, whether it be an animal shelter, a community bookstore, a soup kitchen, a local op shop, a sporting club or their local church, students can select a placement that allows them to contribute their time, skills and effort in a meaningful way.

It's an exciting opportunity to contribute to the community, make a positive difference, and gain valuable real-world experience.

Course Information

Course Requirements

Students are responsible for arranging their own volunteer work experience placement at a suitable not-for-profit community organisation, church, or school.
A Work Experience Agreement Form must be completed and submitted within 6 weeks of commencing the course and must be assessed as Competent before the student can begin their work experience placement.
Students are expected to submit at least one assessment task each week, although they are welcome to progress through the course at a faster pace.
During their work experience placement, students will be required to communicate face to face with customers, co-workers and their workplace supervisor as part of their learning and assessment.
Students will be required to complete a number of assessment tasks during their work experience placement that will need to be observed and signed off by their supervisor.
Students must be willing to be photographed while participating in workplace activities, and these photographs will be required to be submitted as evidence of completed tasks.

Work Experience

Within the first six weeks of course enrolment, the student will be required to organise a work experience placement at a suitable not-for-profit community group, church or school.

The student must complete a minimum of 20 hours of work experience to meet the requirements of the course. If additional time is required to complete the workplace assessment tasks, students may extend their placement beyond 20 hours with the approval of both the workplace supervisor and the course trainer.

Once the work experience placement has been organised, a Workplace Agreement Form will need to be completed and signed by all parties. This form is a vital part of the work experience process, as it ensures that all parties are covered by insurance for the duration of the approved work experience placement. Students must confirm with their work experience supervisor whether a Blue Card is required for their placement, as requirements vary between organisations.

If a Blue Card is required, the student must provide evidence of their Blue Card to their course trainer. (To apply for a Volunteer Blue Card, click here, then scroll down the page and select 'Apply Online' to begin the application process.)
If no Blue Card is required, the student must request written evidence from the work experience supervisor and submit to the course trainer for approval.

Students must not commence their work experience placement until they have been granted approval by their course trainer.

Please note - A parent/guardian or close relative cannot act as the student's supervisor during the student's work experience placement.

Student Support

A weekly online Q&A session is available for students to ask questions, receive guidance and access additional support throughout the course. Attendance is mandatory until the student has successfully completed their first five assessment tasks. Once these tasks are all marked off as ‘competent’, attendance at the weekly Q&A sessions becomes optional, however attendance is encouraged whenever the student requires support.

Certificate II in Community Services Course Application Fee:

External students: $1000

Enrolled Faith Students: $200

Students in years 10, 11 and 12 can enrol in the Certificate II in Community Services at any time throughout the school year.

What is the Course Application Fee?

The Course Application Fee is a non-refundable fee per course, payable to secure enrolment in the course.

Change Request: 30 Day Window from Course Commencement

The Course Application Fee will be applied 30 days from commencement of the course. Students may choose to withdraw within this 30 day window and transfer credit to be applied to another course from our course offering. Enrolment fees apply regardless of student engagement and/or attendance. Students who choose to withdraw after the 30 day window may do so, but must pay a new Course Application Fee.

When can students enrol?

Certificate I and Certificate II

Students can enrol at any time for Certificate I and Certificate II Courses. Generally, the courses take 12 months to complete from commencement.

Certificate III

Certificate III Courses commence in Term 1 only. A new Course Application Fee will apply if students wish to retake a Course.

Employment & Further Study Pathways

Upon completion of this course, students will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to support their local community through volunteering.

The knowledge and skills gained through this course may assist students who wish to pursue further study or may provide a pathway to entry-level roles within the human services sector.
